TLDR: Artificial intelligence (AI) job postings in the D.C. metro area have tripled in the last five years, according to a report by JLL. The region now ranks second in AI job postings, behind only the San Francisco Bay Area. Many of these job openings require government security clearances, driven by the abundance of tech jobs in the government contracting industry. The demand for AI-related lobbying organizations and legal and administrative jobs has also increased. The report suggests that increased lobby efforts in AI could create more real estate demand in downtown D.C. and a need for more data centers. Additionally, government spending on AI research and development is at an all-time high, with President Biden’s fiscal year 2024 budget request including $1.8 billion for AI and machine learning initiatives.
